Samantha Barbee Honored by the Nonprofit CFO of the Year Awards

The International Youth Foundation (IYF) is very pleased to announce that Samantha Barbee, IYF’s CFO and VP for Finance, Administration, and IT, has been named the 2013 Nonprofit CFO Transformational Leader in the National Organization category. The Nonprofit CFO of the Year Awards annually recognizes an outstanding CFO of a nonprofit who has played a major role in improving and strengthening the operations of his or her organization. Ms. Barbee was honored at luncheon ceremony on January 31 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC, jointly hosted by Association TRENDS, Tate & Tyron and West, Lane & Schlager Reality advisors.

“During her tenure as CFO at the International Youth Foundation, Ms. Barbee was able to take a small accounting unit and build it into an organizationally integrated department that includes finance, compliance, human resources, IT, and project operations; this is a major success story,” said Chief Judge of the CFO of the Year Awards and CPA President of LangCPA Consulting LLC, Andrew S. Lang.

Ms. Barbee joined IYF in January 2001, serving as Director of Operations before becoming CFO in January 2004. Before coming to IYF, she worked as a senior associate at La Piana Associates Inc., specializing in strategic restructuring of nonprofit organizations. Prior to that, she was Associate Director of the Nonprofit and Public Management Program and Director of the MBA Student Services at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

“Samantha is one of those inspirational leaders who is always searching for new ways to make us a more efficient, transparent, and welcoming place to work,” says Bill Reese, IYF’s President and CEO. “For more than a decade, she has transformed the way this organization operates and has helped develop an exceptional staff working behind the scene to support those efforts. We are enormously fortunate to have her.”

Ms. Barbee sits on several nonprofit boards, including serving as chair of the MBA Nonprofit Connection, which seeks to engage MBAs in the nonprofit sector; the Treasurer of Amigos de las Americas, a youth leadership initiative; and Vice-Chair of InsideNGO, which supports operational and management capacity for international development organizations. She received her undergraduate degree in government at Georgetown University and her MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.
