Entrepreneurialism, impact investing, microfinance, and job creation are among the themes garnering the attention of ultra high net worth (UHNW) donors according to a new study. Detailing the philanthropic giving behavior of UHNW individuals, Wealth-X and Arton Capital Philanthropy Report 2014 was recently presented at the Global Citizen Forum in Toronto.

The report features case studies to examine the full spectrum of UHNW donor trends, and noted a shift toward newer philanthropic outlets that focus on creating economic opportunities for young people. Knowledge partners for the research project included the International Youth Foundation, Charities Aid Foundation, Global Citizen Foundation, and Population Services International

One such case study presented by IYF highlighted the experience of an Indian small business owner named Maya to demonstrate the potential benefits of engaging UHNW individuals—a group that necessarily empathizes with difficulties of launching an enterprise—in supporting youth entrepreneurship activities.

“Ultra wealthy philanthropists are increasingly focusing on initiatives that provide long-term solutions by enabling the less fortunate to seize opportunities through entrepreneurialism, and using their own business acumen to measure the effectiveness of their philanthropic endeavors and to maximize their returns,” said Mykolas Rambus, CEO of Wealth-X to an audience of government, business, and finance leaders.
