Samsung Electronics, a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, and the International Youth Foundation (IYF) held a two-day conference in South Africa, August 18 to 19, with key stakeholders of the Samsung Real Dreams program across the region.

Aligned with the company’s corporate philosophy, Samsung Real Dreams is a program empowering African youth by providing them with the knowledge and opportunities they need to be successful and realize their dreams. The initiative is underway with the ultimate goal to reach as many as 4,500 young people across Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa who will benefit from training in ICT skills, life skills for employability, entrepreneurship and vocational skills, as well as job placement and enterprise development services.

The conference provided an opportunity for the stakeholders involved to share best practices and learnings as the program enters second half of activities. Participants also visited Samsung Real Dreams projects in Cape Town. The two-day event included a panel discussion engaging leaders from the private, public and civil society sectors on the issues of youth employability and entrepreneurship in Africa. Youth participants from one local Samsung Real Dreams program opened the dialogue, sharing their personal stories, including the challenges they had faced in accessing the job market, and speaking about the ways in which the program has improved their life prospects.

“Samsung Real Dreams was established to help youth in Africa to fulfil their hopes, future aspirations and visions,” said Choongro Lee, President of Samsung South Africa. “A central feature of the program is to help at-risk youth enhance their employability and opportunities for successful, long-term careers.”

Mr Lee added: “This meeting is designed to maximize synergies between involved parties with the common goal of promoting employability and entrepreneurship among young people across Africa. Together with IYF and our local partners, we are confident we can achieve Samsung Real Dreams’ objectives and touch the lives of thousands of young people in the region.”
