What the Insurrection Says About Why Investing in Young People Has Never Been More Critical Hero Image

Last night’s insurrection in our nation’s capital was shocking, though sadly not surprising as there were warning signs for years. Democracy is the grand American experiment, and yesterday its leaders and institutions were tested like never before. Indelible damage was done but just before 4am, the U.S. Congress certified the election of the 46th President and the 49th Vice President of the United States.

I awoke like many of you with a pit in my stomach knowing America was not the same. Many of us in global development have spent decades working to build a more just, peaceful and equitable world and yesterday was a horrific reminder of how much work we have ahead of us.

Moving forward, organizations like IYF are more important than ever as we invest in equipping and inspiring young people around the globe, including in the United States. Ensuring young people have a seat at the table and their diverse voices are heard is critical given they indeed have the most at stake. IYF’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and integrity and empathy is essential as we work with our partners  for a better future for young women and men—especially the most vulnerable—everywhere.

January 6th was heartbreaking but it also strengthened our resolve. We must continue to work together toward a better world and this means investing in young people. IYF is committed to supporting young people from all backgrounds, valuing their diverse opinions, perspectives, and points of view on the issues that affect them, their families, and the world.
