AI is reshaping work. So, what do we do about it?

Let’s all try and stay calm. We must’ve read a thousand times that Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the world of work at a pace unlike any technological transition in recent memory.

Let’s all try and stay calm. We must’ve read a thousand times that Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the world of work at a pace unlike any technological transition in recent memory.

We’ve heard the astonishing stats: in less than two years, more than 27,000 U.S. job losses have been directly linked to AI adoption, with early-career corporate roles and software development jobs among the first affected. At the same time, leading AI labs project systems that could outperform humans across most tasks well within this decade. This isn’t some forecast for 2040. The acceleration is already here and now.

At IYF, our mission is to connect young people to economic opportunities that transform their lives. In our latest policy brief, Meeting the AI Workforce Challenge, we outline a roadmap to navigate this disruption with foresight rather than reaction. The transition ahead presents risk, yes—but also enormous opportunity. If—and it’s a big if—leaders across sectors act together.

What’s Really at Stake?

Economic Competitiveness
AI-enabled organizations are reporting productivity leaps of fivefold or more. That’s staggering. Regions that move quickly to adapt will capture new value; those that don’t could see jobs, investment, and talent slip away.

Equity and Inclusion
Technology doesn’t automatically democratize opportunity. Without intentional strategy and equitable investment, the AI economy could widen inequality and leave millions disconnected from good work.

Human Flourishing
This is more than just a labor market topic. It’s about ensuring dignity, agency, and purpose—helping people to thrive, not simply survive, in a transformed economy.

Our Take on the Path Forward

Our brief calls for a two-track approach grounded in federal leadership and cross-sector mobilization:

1. Federal Leadership: scale and strengthen the national AI Action Plan and America’s Talent Strategy, incorporating scenario planning, universal AI literacy, and more adaptive workforce policy.

2. Cross-Sector Mobilization: link arms across sectors to use our collective assets and skills to meet this challenge through:

  • Building Youth-Inclusive Local AI Workforce Zones to support rapid skills development and lifelong learning
  • Expanding sustained philanthropic investment in education, wellbeing, and human flourishing
  • Improving labor market intelligence to enable responsive, data-driven planning.

A Defining Role for Philanthropy

Government and businesses are moving, but they can’t tackle this alone. We see that philanthropy is uniquely positioned to fill structural gaps, to act boldly, taking risks others can’t, and to place equity at the center of the innovation that’ll be required. Strategic investment today can:

  • Drive inclusive participation in the AI economy
  • Elevate youth leadership, and to co-design and share in the governance of these new solutions
  • Build for long-term prosperity, over short-term fixes.

AI is already rewriting the rules of work. But whether it becomes a tool for shared progress or a driver of dislocation depends on what we do next. The moment calls for partnership, urgency, and creativity. Come and talk to us about it.

If AI is racing ahead, we need to run with it. Read the full policy brief here and help us turn ideas into impact.
