Conectad@s Data 2024 - IYFToday, the information technology (IT) sector is booming. Companies are increasingly investing in IT services, as managing and exchanging information have become essential to both internal and external business operations across sectors. At the same time, educators responsible for preparing the next generation of IT professionals must ensure that the content they teach keeps pace with the constant innovations and changes in the IT sector.

Colombia’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MinTIC) recently analyzed 171 IT companies across four sub-sectors—hardware, communications, software, and IT services—primarily concentrated in Medellín and Bogotá. The analysis revealed rapid and sustained growth in IT within these two cities, with annual rates between 3% and 4%.

However, a significant technology workforce gap persists in the IT sector. In 2020, there were 36,184 job vacancies in the field, yet only 26,017 students graduated from IT-related vocational training programs. This gap highlights the need for better promotion, training, and preparation of young people to meet the sector’s labor demands.

In response, the PriceSmart Foundation and Google.org supported IYF and local implementing organizations such as Comfenalco and Unicafam to address this challenge. Together, they trained 1,150 young people in technical skills (Google Career Certificates), socio-emotional skills, and employability support, equipping them to secure employment in the IT sector.

This program has made a lasting impact on Colombia’s IT sector by empowering young people with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in one of the country’s fastest-growing industries. By combining technical training, skills development, and employability support, it has bridged the gap between the demand for qualified professionals and the opportunities available to them.

The result? A new generation of tech-savvy, resilient professionals ready to drive innovation and growth in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. This initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision for fostering a more inclusive and forward-thinking workforce.
