The International Youth Foundation (IYF) honors the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Richard “Dick” Francis Schubert, our Founding Chairman and Chair Emeritus, who passed away on July 12, 2024. Dick’s visionary leadership and commitment to youth empowerment have left an indelible mark on our organization and on the lives of millions around the world.

As IYF’s first Chairman of the Board, elected at our founding in April 1990, Dick played a pivotal role in shaping IYF’s mission and global impact. He served as Chairman until 1998, continuing as Chair Emeritus, and actively supported and contributing to IYF’s board throughout the remainder of his life. His passion for building bridges between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors fueled IYF's early successes and set a strong foundation for its future growth.

Reflecting on their close friendship and long-standing mentorship, Bill Reese, CEO Emeritus of IYF, shared, "I met Dick Schubert on my first day at IYF in 1998, and he immediately took me under his wing. Over the next 25 years, he was a trusted mentor and invaluable guide. His wisdom and support left a lasting impact on IYF’s mission, and we will always honor his legacy.”

In addition to his work with IYF, Dick’s career spanned prominent roles such as President of the American Red Cross and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation. Throughout his life, he exemplified a deep commitment to service, always seeking to bring together diverse talents and perspectives for the greater good. His legacy extends beyond IYF, having served on the boards of over 30 organizations and advancing initiatives across more than 100 countries.

Dick’s life of service is best encapsulated in his own words: “I hope I’ve made a difference in the world at the end of my fingertips.” He certainly did—and his impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.

A memorial service will be held on September 28, 2024, at McLean Presbyterian Church, McLean, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the following organizations, which were close to Dick’s heart:
