LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Gain exposure to the operational aspects of international development projects, including managing diverse donor requirements as well as on the ground, local operational demands.
- Learn with the policies and procedures framework under which an international development organization operates. Effective and nuanced understanding of these allows for the most effective project management support.
- Become familiar with the financial and compliance components of sub-awards to local implementing organizations. These agreements are the guardrails under which all local work is implemented.
- Gain an understanding of how project budgets are developed, managed and analyzed in support of solid financial monitoring of projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the review of project documents, such as donor agreements, project charters, draft contracts, expense reports, travel authorizations, and payment requests.
- Complete a thorough review of field office procedures, highlighting areas for consideration and coordinating within the department to update materials.
- Assist in the review of sub-grantee documents, such as grant agreements, draft amendments, milestone submissions, and disbursement requests. Manage related grant files ensuring all documentation for compliance purposes is maintained.
- For finalization by operations staff, perform initial financial analysis on monthly financial reports through review of actual expenses against agreement budgets and projected expenditures. Participate in review session with project team.
- Other tasks to be determined within the Operations Department as assigned by the Operations Manager or Director of Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree program; emphasis in international relations or related area preferred.
- 1+ years relevant work experience preferred. Experience with nonprofit operations, international development, project management, or related area preferred.
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills. Attention to detail, reliability, thoroughness and accuracy with numbers.
- Strong organizational skills necessary to support multiple responsibilities. Ability to take initiative, identify and establish priorities for effective time management, as well as follow and execute plans.
- Excellent interpersonal skills appropriate to operating in a multicultural, international environment; and ability to learn and work independently as well as to work in a team-based environment.
- Ability to identify problems and demonstrate creativity and flexibility in addressing problems, works well in group problem solving situations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Ability to conduct business conversation in another language a plus.
- Experienced in the use of the full suite of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc. Extensive experience of MS Excel.
