Rising Together: How our SOAR Curriculum Delivers Powerful Youth Leadership Training

Effective leadership has never looked like a one-size-fits-all formula. For young people stepping into professional spaces, discovering their unique voice requires actionable context, a supportive community, and practical tools designed for the real world. Comprehensive youth leadership training remains vital for the next generation of changemakers.
At the heart of this work is the Youth Opportunity Ambassador Program, a dynamic initiative designed to champion youth leadership globally. To prepare Ambassadors for future professional opportunities, the program proudly utilizes the award-winning SOAR (Supporting Others and Rising) Leadership curriculum.
As an engaging and blended learning program for youth in leadership roles, SOAR equips Ambassadors with essential training across three core areas: personal leadership, collaborative leadership, and project management best practices, alongside critical instruction in self-care and holistic wellbeing.
Unlocking Personal Leadership and Collaboration
At the core of the SOAR curriculum is an intentional focus on self-discovery. Rather than prescribing a rigid definition of what a leader should be, the program encourages participants to explore their individual leadership styles, clarify their personal values, and understand how their unique skills and interests fit into group settings.
“I learned a lot about what I bring to a team,” notes YO Ambassador Amiracle Johnson.
For fellow Ambassador Tony Reyes, the curriculum demystified group dynamics and taught him valuable job and life skills that ultimately influenced his decision to return to the program. Ebenezer Neequaye echoes this sentiment, sharing that SOAR taught him how to self-advocate and “embrace the type of role I play in team activities.”

Beyond personal self-awareness, participants dive deep into collaborative leadership. This includes learning how to motivate others, navigate team dynamics effectively, and give and receive constructive feedback. By combining interactive online sessions with virtual or face-to-face discussions alongside guides and peers, the curriculum ensures that theoretical concepts translate directly into daily life. As Lupita, a participant in the program, explains,
The platform is very didactic and provides clear examples, so it makes it easy for young people to take the knowledge of the leadership program into real life.
Through proven experiential learning models for youth, participants gain the confidence needed to thrive in modern workforce readiness programs.
Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone with Full Support
Leadership is also about execution. Alongside personal and team development, the curriculum teaches young people how to manage real-life projects and events for their schools, workplaces, and communities. Participants learn practical skills such as building a work plan, prioritizing tasks, and evaluating project outcomes.
Applying these skills for the first time can feel intimidating, but growth happens when young leaders receive full support. YO Ambassador Kimberly Rosette initially joined the cohort visualizing herself leading a team in five years’ time. Kimberly shared,
The program pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and develop the confidence to tackle complex problems with creative solutions.
That courage is nurtured through community. Both Kimberly and Maria Angela Lopez, another participant, have emphasized how vital it was to tackle new challenges knowing they had the full backing of their fellow cohort members and IYF employees. “It’s very important to have people that support us and help us grow professionally,” Lopez notes, highly recommending the YO Ambassador Program to future applicants.
Beyond career readiness, the curriculum deeply influences personal growth. Participants learn how to better themselves, uplift their communities, and prepare for long-term professional success through robust youth empowerment programs and targeted skill building for teens.

Addressing the Whole Leader: The Intersection of Wellness and Leadership
True leadership cannot exist in a vacuum separated from personal wellbeing. Recognizing this, IYF’s award-winning SOAR curriculum addresses mental health head-on by teaching young people how to take care of themselves emotionally, spiritually, professionally, and socially.
By building the relationship between self-care and sustainable leadership through a dedicated life skills curriculum, these resources create a ripple effect. They not only benefit youth navigating the complexities of modern careers, but they also educate adults—including teachers, mentors, and employers—about trauma and the unique mental health needs of young leaders today.
When we invest in young people through proven youth development programs, we are doing more than just readying them for a job. We are walking alongside them to build a stronger, kinder world.
